June 2021 Return-To-Play Update
With the announcement of the Government of Alberta’s ‘Open for Summer Plan’, I am so excited to let you all know that the Calgary Kookaburras can start our 2021 season this June. We are currently in Stage 1 of reopening, which will allow us to resume training in distanced, 10 person cohorts. It is estimated that on June 10, we will enter Stage 2 and we can begin playing full-contact footy again! Despite the pandemic, we had a very successful 2020 season and I am looking forward to seeing everyone again this year.
Our first days out on the field will be Monday, June 7 and Thursday, June 10 at A. E. Cross School (3445 37 St SW, Calgary, AB) at 6:00pm. Starting June 14, we will be training on Mondays, and playing games on Wednesdays starting at 6:00pm.
The board is paying very close attention to all restrictions and guidelines in order to have a safe season. Although COVID-19 cases are dropping, isolation and quarantine requirements remain in place for any individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19, or have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive. Click here to see Alberta’s most recent isolation requirements. Similar to 2020, all players will need to fill out a screening questionnaire prior to attending all games and training. This form will allow us to gather information in case that contact tracing is needed due to a positive COVID-19 case. The form can be found on the front page of our website. As always, if you are feeling ill, please stay home and come for a kick later on in the summer.
The Calgary Kookaburras will also be requiring all active players to have received at least one COVID-19 vaccination. This is to ensure the health and safety of all players and their families. Due to the high contact nature of Australian Football, and that many players have family members who are not eligible to be vaccinated, the board asks that if you have not received your immunization vaccine that you return to play with us at a later time. (Individuals who are religiously or medically exempt from vaccinations are not included in this policy)
I can’t wait to see everyone out on the field! If anyone has any questions, I can be reached by email at dani@calgarykookaburras.ca. Please stay tuned to our socials for more exciting events this summer.
Cheers,
Dani Bartkiewicz
President, Calgary Kookaburras Australian Football Club
